“The sun did not shine. It was too wet to play. So, we sat in the house all that cold, cold, wet day. I sat there with Sally. We sat there, we two. And I said, ‘How I wish we had something to do!’ Too wet to go out and too cold to play ball. So we sat in the house. We did nothing at all.”
–Dr. Seuss
Thus begins one of the most famous children’s books, “The Cat In The Hat.” The poor narrator and his sister, Sally, were so bored one rainy afternoon that they couldn’t think of a single thing to do. Then along came a fun-loving cat to save the day.
While it’s not likely a large cat wearing a hat will come to play with you and your kids on a rainy day, there are plenty of fun things you can do to help ease the rainy day blues. Keep reading for some great ideas.
Play, Play, Play
The Cat In The Hat had the right idea about playing games on that rainy day. However, his games of “Up, Up, Up With A Fish” and “Fun-In-A-Box” were maybe not the best ideas. Here are a few less-messy games to try with your kids.
- Hide And Seek– Few things beat the classic hide-and-seek game. Kids, young and old, enjoy the sport of finding the perfect hiding spot or seeing how quickly they can find others. This game is quite simple and requires little to no supplies.
- Dance Party– Another simple but fun activity is a dance party. Dancing is a great way to boost your mood, move your body, and have fun being silly. So, turn on some fun music and let loose.
- Board Games– Fight boredom by busting out your favorite board games. A rainy day is perfect for teaching your kids classic board games, such as Life, Sorry, or Scrabble.
- Scavenger Hunt– While this game will take some planning, your kids will love reading clues and searching for objects around the house.
- Dress Up– Let your and your kids’ imaginations loose as you dress up and play pretend. You can act out your favorite fairy tale or create one of your own.
- Puddle Jump– If the weather isn’t too cold outside, put on a rain jacket and boots and go out in the rain. You kids will have a blast jumping in puddles, singing, and dancing in the rain.
Get Creative
Make memories and works of art with your kids by trying one or more of the following creative activities.
- Homemade Playdough– All you need is flour, cream of tartar, salt, water, oil, and food coloring to mix up a batch of homemade playdough. Your kids will have fun both making the playdough and playing with it.
- Cardboard Box Creation– You know all of those cardboard boxes you have sitting in the garage, waiting to go to the recycling bin? Bring those bad boys in and watch your kids’ imaginations run wild as they build houses, spaceships, and more.
- Build A Blanket And Pillow Fort– Grab all the blankets, pillows, and chairs you can to create a giant fort. Don’t forget to grab flashlights, books, and treats to make a whole afternoon out of this activity.
- Art– Draw, paint, or color pictures to hang around the house.
- Build With Blocks– Whether you have wood blocks or Legos, building together will provide hours of fun.
Treat Yourselves
Brighten up the dreary day by indulging in some of your favorite foods and treats. The best thing about food is that it goes great with almost any other activity.
- Indoor Picnic– Order your favorite take-out or cook your favorite meal together as a family. Then, turn it into an indoor picnic. Even better, eat it inside that blanket fort you made.
- Bake Cookies– Rainy days are the perfect time to bake delicious cookies. Bake your favorite tried-and-true recipe, or try a new gourmet cookie recipe. When you’re done, you can even deliver cookies to someone in your neighborhood. Or if you’re too busy with the hide-and-seek fame or pillow fort, we’ve got you covered. Order some comfort with cookie gifts by mail. We’ve got them for every occasion—including rainy days.
- Pop Some Corn– Whether you microwave a bag of popcorn or pop kernels over the stove, popcorn is a great treat to add to any of your rainy-day activities. Get creative and try different popcorn seasonings, add-ins, or toppings.
Cuddle Up And Relax
If the rain has you feeling like you just want to lounge around, put on your comfiest pajamas and try one of these relaxing activities.
-
- Read– Grab your favorite blanket and cozy up together to read some of your favorite books. Maybe even “The Cat In The Hat” will find its way into the lineup.
- Watch Movies– After making some of your favorite treats, turn on a classic movie or stream a new one online. Extend the relaxation by having a whole movie marathon or binge-watch a favorite TV show.
- Put Together A Puzzle– Enjoy the sound of rain in the background as you work with your kids to assemble a puzzle.
As you can see, there are many ways to have fun on a wet, rainy day. Whether it’s baking cookies, reading a book, or finding a good game to play. All of these activities are “Cat In The Hat”-approved.
Pick one you’ve already done or try something new. Your mother will not mind at all if you do.
